Lot Essay

The artist may be the same as the P.A. Schmitz by whom there is a signed portrait, dated 1749, of a canon in the Pfarrhaus of St. Kunibert, Cologne, and also a Portrait of a clergyman in St. George's, Cologne. It is possible that he is the same as the Peter Augustin Schmitz elected as a Master in the Cologne painters' guild in 1719. The signature 'P. Schmitz Senior' would be understandable given the presence in the city of Peter Joseph Schmitz, court painter to the Kurfürsts Clemens August and Maximilain Friedrich of Cologne.
