Lot Essay

Probably originally one panel in a series of the Passion and Resurrection of Christ, this painted enamel is based quite closely upon the Deposition from Dürer's Small Passion of circa 1509-10 (W. Strauss, Albrecht Dürer: Woodcuts and Wood Blocks, New York, 1980, no. 128, p. 386). Other Limoges enamelled panels depicting scenes from Dürer's Small Passion cycle can be found in the Los Angeles Museum of Art, Los Angeles, and the Walters Art Gallery, Washington D.C..
