Lot Essay

'From the 1970's onwards, we see a few broad groups of imagery in Pyne's works. There are the Chaitanya images with the complementary images of sages, heroes or warriors... When Pyne painted Chaitanya, he was not seeking to revalidate an old icon. He only wanted to project him as a symbol for a hero figure.' (Ella Datta, Ganesh Pyne, His Life And Times, Calcutta, 1998, p.53.)
