Penwapple

10½ x 15in. (26.7 x 38.2cm)

This is one of many paintings that Scott made in the glen at Penkill, carved by the Penwhapple Burn. As he wrote in his Autobiographical Notes (II, pp.75-6), 'the glen below the house was most interesting to me, and revived my ancient landscape proclivities. Every Summer for nearly ten years I painted there'. The spot seems to have been particularly associated with his love for Alice Boyd. 'As we sat painting together by the rushing Penwhapple stream....' he continued,'there had never occurred a misunderstood word or wish which might divide us. To this he added ambiguously,'My wife had faith in us and AB's brother as well'.
The Penwhapple also inspired D.G. Rossetti's poem The Stream's Secret, began when he was staying at Penkill in 1869.
