The picture was painted early in 1892, presumably from sketches made on the spot or a photograph, as an illustration to Bell Scott's Autobiographical Notes, which was published on 15 November that year. A barn-like structure, the Hall had been built in 1883-4 on a site earmarked for 'future extensions' when Spencer Boyd restored the castle in the 1850s. 'It was designed entirely, outside and inside, stonework and woodwork, down to the smallest detail of decoration, by Mr Scott. He had no professional assistance except from the local master-workmen, and he was naturally proud of it as his solitary achievement in architecture'. Autobiographical Notes, II, p.325). The Hall served as a ground-floor dining room for Scott and Miss Boyd, both of whom were now elderly, as well as a place to display their pictures. For a modern photograph, see Country Life, 21 March 1991, p.116
