William Losh was Alice Boyd's grandfather on her mother's side. A partner of George Stephenson and manager of the Walker Iron Works Newcastle, he encouraged Spencer Boyd, Alice's brother, to rebuild Penkill in the 1850's and defrayed the cost of the work
