Rev. William Harper was the son of the Minister of Boharm in Banffshire. This discreet young gentleman was a clergyman of the Schottish Episcopal Church who worked in Orkney, Aberdeenshire and Leith before becoming the Rector of Old St. Paul's Church, Edinburgh, in 1735. He married Katherine Threipland in 1741. She was the daughter of Sir David Threipland, 2nd Baronet and died childless in 1764. Harper, the author of a "Treatise on Infallibility," an attack on Roman Catholicism, died in 1765.
