Lot Essay

The present picture was sold at Galerie Charpentier in 1958 as lot 34 together with a Wedding Dance (signed and dated 1625, 26.5cm.), as lot 33; the latter was subsequently sold from the collection of the late Charles De Pauw at Sotheby's, 9 April 1986, lot 15. Marlier, loc. cit., who incorrectly listed both pictures as being of the same dimensions, described them as a pair. A version of the present picture with slight variations in the figures, and paired with a Landscape with Figures, is listed by Marlier, op. cit., pp. 406-7, fig. 254.
