The inscription reads 'From Miss Crichton, Hillside, Cumnock, to Lord Ardwall, in Memory of his old friends Hew Hamilton Crichton W.S., 7th September 1820 to 2nd April 1906 and James Arthur Crichton, Sheriff of The Lothians and Peebles, 25th September 1825 to 29th May 1891'.
