William and John Gourlay were grandsons of Douglas Gourlay, a ballmaker at Bruntsfield circa 1780, and were related by marriage to McEwan and Dunn clubmaking families. The Gourlays held an unrivalled reputation as golf ball makers in the nineteenth century
