Lot Essay

Murillo was a contemporary of José Maria Velasco and studied with him at the Academy of San Carlos in Mexico (1865-70) of which he later became a director. Like Velasco he specialised in views of the Valley of Mexico. Compare his two larger canvases of the same subject, Christie's New York, 29 November 1983, lots 6 and 7)
