Lot Essay

Armstrong was born in Dublin where he studied art and was an apprentice engineer on the English and Irish railways before emigrating to Toronto in 1851. He worked on various Canadian Pacific Railway projects and painted scenes of Indian and pioneer life on his travels. He was primarily a watercolourist and his oils were mostly restricted to illustrations of current events in Toronto and portraits of Indians, the latter now of some historical interest
