Lot Essay

Hinchinbrook Island lies off the town of Cardwell, north of Townsville, North Queensland. Although first sighted by Captain James Cook on 8 June 1770, Hinchinbrook Island was not opened to European settlement until the Boyd family from Ingham in Queensland established the Ripple Creek Sugar Mill with South Sea Islander labour in the late 1870s. The hills beyond may include Barry Castle Hill (579m.). For further information on the island see A. and M. Thorsborne, Hinchinbrook Island, The Land Time Forgot, Sydney, 1988
