Lot Essay

These tables correspond to an oval table with gold-enriched foliage acquired from the Crewe collection by Sir John Soane (d. 1837). Furniture of the same pattern was presented in the 1780s to Warren Hastings, India's Governor-General, by Mani Begum (see A. Jaffer Furniture from British India and Ceylon, London, 2001, no 80).
