1963½ FORD GALAXIE 500XL
Chassis No. 3A66Z177188
Engine No. T.B.A.
Red with black interior.
Engine: V8, 390ci, 300bhp at 4,600rpm; Gearbox: three speed automatic; Brakes: four wheel drum; Suspension: front, independent, rear, live axle. Left hand drive.
1963 was a big year for Ford Motor Company with a record range of 47 models. Amongst these there were no less than thirteen different station wagon possibilities, eight Falcons and, of course, the popular Galaxie model. The Galaxie 500XL had completely new styling for 1963 and its racy appearance was not only skin-deep; the Galaxie was available with a 164hp, 260 cubic inch engine or the optional 390 cubic inch which developed an incredible 300hp.
Ford's commitment to develop a name in racing was beginning to pay off. A team of Falcon Sprints entered the famous Monte Carlo Rally and dominated the big-car class throughout the event. The small but potent Lotus Cortinas were proving extremely competitive in the GT car class and the Ford-powered Shelby sports and racing cars quickly became a legend in their own right.
This Galaxie 500XL successfully competed in the famed 1995 Tour de France rally; a similar car competed in the original event. It was discovered by a prominent Ferrari collector who recognised it as being an excellent original example. The optional heavy duty suspension was installed and a full brake overhaul undertaken prior to the event. Following completion of all of the various stages, including road, hill climbing and the regulation track sections, the Galaxie was driven from Biarritz to Beaulieu, again without fault.
The Galaxie provides a fun and inexpensive entry into one of the premiere touring events. Its spacious boot enables the owner to always have plenty of clothes on hand, and the ride makes the Galaxie a far more practical car than a Ferrari GTO. This vehicle is subject to VAT and duty to an EC buyer.
