Lot Essay

The stools, with acanthus-wrapped truss feet and richly scrolled and fretted aprons, are designed in the Louis XIV arabesque manner popularised by Daniel Marot (d. 1752), architect to King William III, through the publication of his Oeuvres, circa 1700. A chair, then at Burley-on-the-Hill, with related feet and triumphal-arched stretcher, displaying the coronet recording Daniel Finch's elevation as Earl of Nottingham in 1683, was illustrated by C. Hussey 'Walnut Furniture at Burley-on-the-Hill' Country Life, 24 February 1923, p. 255, fig. 3
