These brass-galleried commodes with column-filled corners are designed in the French manner popularised by Thomas Sheraton's Cabinet and Upholsterer's Drawing Book, 1793. A related pattern for a gold-enriched commode with spiral-fluted balusters features in Gillows' 1803 Estimate Sketch Book, no. 1735 (preserved in the Westminster City Library).
