Each with eared Gothic-galleried top above a fall-front with an egg-and-dart panel and enclosing a fitted interior with red leather-lined writing-surface, pigeon-holes and cedar-lined drawers, above a further cedar-lined long drawer and a pair of panelled doors enclosing a shelf, the whole front flanked by reeded columns and on toupie feet, one top and gallery later, possibly with later unifying elements

Lot Essay

A related column-flanked and brass-galleried secretaire, with hollow-cornered panels and lion-mask handles, is illustrated in S. Redburn, 'John McLean and Son', Furniture History, 1978, pl. 37A. The latter is attributed to the workshops of John McLean (d. 1825) of Marylebone Street, whose cabinet-work finished 'in the neatest manner' received praise in Thomas Sheraton's Cabinet Dictionary, 1803
