A related column-flanked and brass-galleried secretaire, with hollow-cornered panels and lion-mask handles, is illustrated in S. Redburn, 'John McLean and Son', Furniture History, 1978, pl. 37A. The latter is attributed to the workshops of John McLean (d. 1825) of Marylebone Street, whose cabinet-work finished 'in the neatest manner' received praise in Thomas Sheraton's Cabinet Dictionary, 1803
