PROVENANCE:
Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton (1874-1922), and thence by descent.

The photographs are mostly souvenirs of Shackleton's triumphant progress on his return from the Nimrod expedition. Arriving to be met by tumultuous crowds at Charing Cross station on 14 June 1909, his busy schedule included his investiture with the Royal Victorian Order by the King at Balmoral in July, lecture tours in Scandinavia in October and in the United Kingdom in November-December. After three days off with his family in Edinburgh over Christmas, he embarked on further lecture tours on the continent and audiences with Kaiser Wilhelm II, Prince Henry of Prussia and Tsar Nicholas II, and to the United States and Canada from January-June 1910. The portrait of Queen Mary dates to his return from the Endurance expedition in May 1917. (10)
