Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton (1874-1922)

Details
Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton (1874-1922)
A collection of cheques and pay orders signed by Shackleton, comprising 36 cheques of the Union of London & Smiths Bank Ltd, 16 October - 4 December 1911, 47 cheques of Lloyds Bank Ltd, 15 June - 11 July 1914, and a cheque of the Bank of England, 2 May 1919, 84 items in total, the Lloyds Bank cheques co-signed by Frank W. White (Secretary of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition), a number of the cheques countersigned on verso, some by members of the I.T.A.E. including Frank Wild, Frank Worsley, Aeneas Mackintosh, George Marston and R.S. Clark.

PROVENANCE:
Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton (1874-1922), and thence by descent.

The flurry of cheques late in 1911 may reflect Shackleton's involvement in the bankruptcy proceedings against his ill-starred brother Frank, which reached court in late October: a letter to F.L. Smith in February 1912 reflected on the situation, 'I have ... been paying out for things that really were not my personal affairs'. The group of payments in the summer of 1914 clearly relates to preparations for the departure of the Endurance (8 August).
Special notice
No VAT will be charged on the hammer price, but VAT at 17.5% will be added to the buyer's premium which is invoiced on a VAT inclusive basis.
