The Sweep of the Southern Seas

signed with initials and dated 'A.G.S. 25.2.18', titled on the reverse of the mount
watercolour, unframed
14½ x 21in. (36.8 x 53.3cm.)

and one other similar titled 'The Dissipation of Energy' by the same artist

PROVENANCE:
Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton (1874-1922), and thence by descent.

Presumably both subjects were inspired by Shackleton's boat journey of 1916. It has been suggested that the artist may be Gertrude Alice Shackleton, known as Alice, Shackleton's eldest sister.
