PROVENANCE:
By descent from the artist to the present owner.

The present group of Wilson's sketches ranges from a prize-winning drawing made at Cheltenham College in 1888 (he won the School prize for drawing four years in succession) to his Swiss work in Davos where he spent November 1898 - May 1899 convalescing from tuberculosis. He became engaged to Oriana Souper in October and sat his medical examinations in Cambridge at the end of the year. In 1900 he devoted an increasing amount of time to ornithological studies, a vocation which took over as he waited for his health to improve before taking up a hospital appointment. He would join Scott's Discovery expedition in 1901 as surgeon, artist and zoologist, sailing on 6 August, just three weeks after his marriage to Oriana Souper.
