William Speirs Bruce (1867-1921)

A GOOD COPY, SIGNED BY ONE OF THE THREE AUTHORS. Bruce was leader of this expedition aboard the Scotia commanded by Thomas Robertson. 'First oceanographical exploration of Weddell Sea; discovered northern part of Caird Coast, Coats Land, but no landing possible; wintered on Laurie Island, South Orkney Islands, where a meteorological observatory was established, 1 April 1903... and the island charted; Alan Ramsey, engineer, died on the island, 6 August 1903; his grave is the first of the island's cemetery... Visited the Falkland Islands (at the beginning and end of the expedition), Gough Island and Tristan da Cunha. Conducted a comprehensive scientific programme, made cinematographic films and sound recordings.' (Headland 1317). Conrad p.128; Spence 193.
