No. 96 in Ponting's exhibition at the Fine Art Society, London (printed in the largest format 'D', width 29in.): 'This beautiful study was secured in the summer, after the break up in the ice in McMurdo Sound. It was made at midnight, by the light of the Midnight Sun, which in these regions is then nearly as high at 12 p.m. as at noon. A part of the ice-foot is seen, and in the distance, some stranded icebergs.'
