The Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition 1914-1917: twelve direct positive glass lantern slides including S.Y. Endurance at Buenos Aires, studies of Rickinson and penguins, the Endurance beset in the Weddell Sea, Ocean Camp and Elephant Island

3¼ x 3¼in. (8.3 x 8.3cm.)
(12)

PROVENANCE:
Lewis Raphael Rickinson (1883-1945), and thence by descent to his granddaughter, the present owner.

Part of Rickinson's set of Hurley's lantern slides used to lecture on the expedition. An unsourced and undated newspaper cutting with the slides recalls a lecture given at North Aldrington: 'Engineer-Commander Rickinson, with the aid of many beautiful lantern slides - some of them coloured - held his audience in the closest of grips for over an hour as he described the epic expedition to the South Pole... It was a story of superhuman courage, told in the simple modest language of a sailor and a hero.' (12)
Special notice
