Details
Alexander Hepburne Macklin (1889-1967)
A collection of correspondence concerning Macklin's projected involvement in a series of polar expeditions, 1924-1925, including letters by Frank A. WORSLEY, Sir James Mann WORDIE, George Binney (4 letters), Macklin (autograph draft and retained copy) and others, altogether 24 pages, various sizes, with two related printed accounts and two folding printed maps of the Arctic.

PROVENANCE:
Alexander Hepburne Macklin (1889-1967), and thence by descent to the present owners.

Macklin is invited to join the Oxford Arctic Expedition, 1924, a projected expedition to King Edward VII Land, 1924, the Algarsson North Polar Expedition, 1925, and applies unsuccessfully to join the 1925-1927 Discovery (Oceonographic) Expedition. An affectionate letter from Frank Worsley urges Macklin to take part in the Algarsson expedition, suggesting various alternatives to make the request more attractive, ending 'You've got to come you old sod!, Yrs aye, Wuzzles'.Wordie writes in November 1924 about 'A big Antarctic expedition ... at present afoot to visit King Edward VII Land for two years. Exploration to be done with dogs and possibly caterpillar tractors', asking if he can put Macklin's name forward. Macklin himself applies to join the Discovery Expedition as Surgeon, but the salary of £200, 'less than I have received previously', proves a sticking point. Lt-Col Dr E.H. Marshall was eventually appointed to the post.
