AN IMPORTANT HISTORICAL RING MOUNTED WITH THE HAIR OF EDWARD IV
The oval gold bezel set below glass with an entwined lock of the hair of Edward IV secured by gilt thread against a blue glass ground and inscribed around 'Edvardus 4th Inclytus Rex Angliae Vindesoriae Sepultus A.D. 1483' in gilt letter on a white enamel ground, with concave back and plain gold hoop, circa 1789, finger size K 1/2, in fitted red leather case
The inscription reads 'Edward IV celebrated King of England buried at Windsor in 1483'. According to the Dictionary of National Biography, the tomb of Edward IV (1441-1483) was opened in 1789 (presumably when the above lock of hair was mounted as a ring) and his body was found to measure six foot three inches
$6,200-9,300
