AN ITALIAN GOLD AND ENAMEL REVIVALIST PENDANT BY MARCHI

Of lobed quatrefoil form, the centre with a grey green cabochon chalcedony bordered by translucent red enamel in ropework borders, with pearls at the outer edges, the red and blue enamel reverse inscribed 'Raphael Caeciliae Caecilia Tibi: QV', the loop signed Marchi Bologna Aemilia Ars (The Emilian Art of Marchi, Bologna), circa 1860, 6.5cm. overall height

The inscription reads 'As Raphael to Cecilia, so Cecilia (gives) to you'. The pendant is a copy of a jewel worn by St. Cecilia in the Raphael painting 'La Sacra Conversazione', installed in the church of S.Giovanni al Monte in Bologna in 1415. For another see H.Tait, op.cit., lot 1018, and both Queen Elena of Italy, who liked Bolognese art, and Enid Layard, wife of the archeologist and diplomat Sir Austen Layard, are known to have owned similar pendants
