The firm of Phillips Bros was restyled Phillips Bros & Son when Alfred Phillips joined his father Robert in 1865. The unusual mark of an applied oval tab appears to be indistinctly struck with the initials RP and the number 18. According to S. Bury, Jewellery 1789-1910, 1991, p.459 'Phillips, Brogden and other firms making archeological jewellery adopted applied plaques for their own unofficial marks'
