Lot Essay
An avid and passionate traveller, Spitzweg made endless excursions into the Bavarian countryside. On these wanderings, often accompanied by his friend and fellow artist Eduard Schleich the Elder, he would find inspiration in all its varied configurations. Our work depicts the outskirts of Nymphenburger Park, in the vicinity of Munich. Directly outside the walls to the park, a postal carriage followed by a group of figures, is moving in the direction of Obermenzing.
Datable to 1870/75, this piece is amongst a selection of landscape paintings the artist undertook in his later years. Not only does it reflect his own personal enjoyment of discovering and capturing the countryside, it also illustrates Spitzweg's keen interest in meteorological and geological studies, of which he was an amateur student. These interests were always incorporated in a painterly fashion and helped to accentuate the character of the landscape. Often these pieces were inexpensively executed on the lids of cigar-boxes which Spitzweg would give to his housekeeper, or to friends.
