Sir Henry Lawrence (1806-1857) had a distinguished career in India, culminating in his appointment as Chief Commissioner and A.G.G. in Oudh. He died defending the residency in Lucknow during the mutiny. Remembered for his sympathies with the native aristocracy, and for the establishment of the Lawrence Asylums for children of European soldiers, his statue is in St. Paul's Cathedral.
