Of oval form with cusped flat front and back, the rounded sides running at the top to a hinged cover, the back with raised square plate for attachment to a belt, the front overlaid with gold, a very finely worked floral spray with five large composite flowerheads left as silhouettes, the sides with a band of similar silhouetted floral meander between minor similar stripes, the rectangular hinge with a similar nasta'liq dedicatory inscription, the back plate with carnation flowerheads linked by floral sprays in gold on the steel ground, minute damage and corrosion

Lot Essay

The nasta'liq inscription on the lid contains a dedication to Mir Fath'ali Sirkar-i Khan Talpur. Fath'ali established himself ra'is of Sind in 1783 AD, thus founding the dynasty of the Talpur Mir's of Sind. A tulwar with gold-inlaid inscriptions in the name of two members of the dynasty was sold in these Rooms (Fine Antique Arms and Armour, 26 October 1994, lot 21).
