A FRAGMENTARY DAMASCUS POTTERY DISH
MAMLUK SYRIA, 14TH CENTURY

With rounded cavetto and everted flat rim on short foot, the interior painted in underglaze black and blue with a central cupsed roundel containing a lotus flower in a band of scrolling vine, the cavetto with spotted white panels below scrolling lunettes, the rim with chequered panels alternating with blue roundels, the exterior with radiating panels containing stylised trees alternating with inscription bands bordered by blue stripes, all covered with a thick slightly blue translucent glaze, repaired fragments and plaster infill
