[SYME, Patrick (1774-1845)]. A treatise on British song-birds. Edinburgh: A.Allardice for John Anderson jun. and Simpkin & Marshall of London, 1823.

8° (210 x 130mm). 15 hand-coloured engraved plates by R.Scott after "an English artist", with coloured backgrounds. (Most plates lightly offset onto facing text.) Near-contemporary half calf (joints slightly split). Provenance: H.M.Young (signature); Roland James Corbet (bookplate).

FIRST EDITION. Syme, Scottish drawing master, colourist and a flower painter by profession, was born in Edinburgh on 17 September 1774. He taught Sir William Jardine to paint and supervised the colouring of Selby and Jardine's Illustrations of British Ornithology from 1827. However, despite these credentials, the plates in the present work are not after Syme as he explains on p.39 of the introduction: "The plates are admirably engraved... from very correct and beautiful drawings done by an English artist." Mullens and Swann p.572; Nissen IVB 920; Zimmer p.621.
