Godwin first met the actress Ellen Terry, wife of G.F.Watts, in Bristol in 1861. Their friendship revived when Godwin moved to London, and in 1868, Terry left Watts to set up home with Godwin. After producing two children Edith and Edward, Watts and Terry parted in 1876 "by mutual misunderstanding".
