Lot Essay

Dufy and the Catalan ceramicist J.L. Artigas collaborated on a number of pieces between 1922 and 1932, and then again from 1937 to 1939. Together they created about 110 unique vases, each individually numbered on the base. The vases were decorated with various motifs including horses, fish, shells, and Dufy's favourite, naiads and bathers.
Le Centaure was a prominent contemporary art gallery in Brussels representing works by leading Belgian and other artists including Braque, Chagall, Derain, Vlaminck, Dufy, Leger, Magritte, Miro, Zadkine, Minne and van Dongen. The gallery also published its own journal, and issue No. 5 (Feb 1928) contains articles on Dufy by Christian Zervos, Paul Poiret and Artigas.
