Lot Essay
This actual length of fabric was originally set in the bed alcove in the bedroom at the Wolfers' Brussels apartment, created in 1928. The same design was also used to cover the pair of Ruhlmann boudoir chairs for the same interior (lot 210). See contemporary photograph reproduced above, another view illustrated with lot 209).
Compare with a similar design by Dufy for Bianchini Férier, circa 1920, illustrated: Raoul Dufy, Hayward Gallery, November 1983 - February 1984, Cat.No. 386, p.70.
Bianchini Férier, whose factory was at Tournon, near Lyon, also had an outlet in Brussels, and it is likely that the fabric was purchased through this branch, possibly by the firm of Blondel, who were employed by the Wolfers in the creation of the bedroom, (see lot 210).
