Lot Essay

A study for the watercolour dated 1876, sold in these Rooms on 16 October 1981, lot 47, and reproduced in Christopher Wood, Olympian Dreamers, 1983, p.196, pl.4. As Peter Cormack observes in the catalogue of the Holiday exhibition, 1989, a nude female figure representing Music with a seascape background could hardly be a more 'archetypally "Aesthetic" subject'.
