Lot Essay

The painting depicts the premises of Andrew S. Clarke, Ltd., part of the Ranken fruit and flower business, in Market Street, Edinburgh, at the turn of the century. The auctioneer depicted is Christian Clarke, one of the founders of the fruit business in Edinburgh, who also ran a religious mission in Leith, Edinburgh. He died in the early 1930s.
