A FINE 28-BORE BOHEMIAN OVER-AND-UNDER FLINTLOCK SPORTING RIFLE

With blued swamped octagonal barrels cut with seven grooves, the top barrel sighted, with silver fore-sight, and stamped at the breech with five gold-lined marks, two of them the maker's marks (Neue Støckel 7926, 7927), gold-lined touch-holes, border engraved burnished rounded locks each engraved with flowers and foliage on the tail, finely figured moulded walnut full stock carved in relief with flowers and foliage, carved cheek-piece, plain brass mounts of shaped outline, trigger-guard of brass and wood, brass escutcheon engraved with the initial F, later patch-box cover, iron sling mounts, brass fore-end caps, faceted brass ramrod-pipes, brass-tipped ramrod, and in fine original condition throughout

Lot Essay

The late owner's hand-written note in the patch-box gives the following provenance:
'This double barrel flint rifle belonged to Lord Malmesbury & came from his Armoury at Heron's Court, Christchurch, Hampshire'

Ferdinand Morawek of Jenikau and Krumau was born in 1754 and died in 1833. He was apprenticed to Stanislaus Paczett, and worked from 1781 to 1791 for the Princes Auersperg, then from 1792 to his death as court gunmaker to Prince Joseph Schwarzenberg
