With rebowned twist barrels, case-hardened recessed patent breeches signed on the extension of the rib and each with platinum lines and platinum-lined touch-hole, engraved grooved tang, signed case-hardened detented locks each with safety-catch, roller, and rainproof pan, the jaw screws (one replaced) each with chequered head, figured walnut half-stock, chequered butt, flat pommel, engraved blued iron mounts, and stirrup ramrod, retaining some original finish: in original lined and fitted oak case with accessories including flask covered in red leather, the lid with flush-fitting carrying handle and brass plaque engraved 'G. Fitz William Esq. Rl. Horse Guards', London proof marks

Lot Essay

George Fitz William enlisted at the age of 20. He was appointed Cornet (2nd Lt.) in the Royal Horse Guards on 12 February 1776, having previously served in the 6th Dragoon Guards. He retired on 24 July 1776 (just over five months service)
