A FINE CASED PAIR OF 16-BORE D.B. FLINTLOCK CARRIAGE PISTOLS

With rebrowned twist barrels, case-hardened recessed patent breeches each with platinum line, platinum-lined maker's stamp, and platinum-lined touch-hole, engraved grooved case-hardened tangs, signed border engraved case-hardened bevelled detented locks each with safety-catch, roller, and rainproof pan, signed patent steels numbered from 6436 to 6439, figured walnut half-stocks, chequered butts, finely engraved blued iron mounts including serial numbered trigger-guards, blued trigger-plates each with pineapple finial, silver escutcheons and barrel-bolt escutcheons, original horn-tipped ramrods, and much original finish: in original lined and fitted mahogany case with accessories including a three-way flask covered in red leather, the lid with trade label

Sold with two manuscript notes which read '29 Oct. 1872 copy J. Hamilton Esqre; Sir, The double pistols which you have purchased from me named Joseph Manton are genuine articles & have been purchased by the late Lord Gosford for 60 gns. (signed) James Calderwood, 24 Upper Sackville St.', and 'A pair of best Double Barrelled Pistols with Mahogany case and every necessary apparatus, made by "Joseph Manton - London", and purchased from him by the late Lord G- for "sixty Guineas", - They are quite new, are engaged genuine, and will be sold for 25 Guineas - (signed) Wm. Dempsey, 192 (Great Brtiain St.)'

Both signatories were Dublin gunmakers in the 19th Century
