Lot Essay

The design is derived from 16th Century Turkish Iznik pottery. The flowers - pinks - form one of the favourite motifs of this ware, and the fact that they radiate, combined with their small central roundels, makes them akin to blue and white Iznik dishes of the period 1535-1545, but since neither animals nor birds appeared before 1550, it seems probable that the dish is adopted from several Iznik items.
