Lot Essay

This library chair is designed in the "Antique" manner with curved Klismos crest-rail joined by scrolled bergere arms, embellished with Grecian palmettes and foliage, on winged Minerva therm legs with panther feet. This type of consular or curule chair was popularised by Jacob frères during the period of Napoleon's consulate.

The shape and decoration of this chair derives from two designs illustrated in C. Pernier and P.F.L. Fontaine, Recueil des Décorations Intérieures, Paris, 1812. Plate XV shows a chair with similarly decorated and shaped back made by Jacob frères for the bedroom of 'Citizen V.' in Paris. Likewise the design of the base is similar to that of a chair illustrated in plate LX
