This miniature is taken after a selfportrait by Elisabeth Vigée Lebrun. The original was sold at Christie's, 14 December 1979, lot 175. A replica of the painting is in the Accademia di San Luca, Rome. Another version was with René Gimpel, Paris, in 1930.

Thieme-Becker mentions S. Caruson, an English miniaturist, who worked in London and Naples in 1830/40. He exhibited in the South Kensington exhibition in 1865. Carlo is possibly his son
