Château Haut-Brion--Vintage 1955
Pessac (Graves), 1er cru classé
Levels: one top, one upper and one low shoulder; soiled labels and corroded capsules
Tasting note: Never very deep, yet rich, ruby-centred. The nose is consistently earthy, with lovely, ripe, soft and gentle progressions. Haut-Brion is always the odd-man-out, quite different in taste from the first-growth Médocs: earthy, tobacco, sometimes charred, bracken-like or tarry, but - since the last war - consistently well made and elegant. A fine wine but a bit more austere than its peers. M.B.
