Lot Essay

The work was commissioned by the Lord Rhodes of Saddleworth, K.G., D.F.C., P.C., D.L., direct from Lowry after a meeting in Woodhouses in the Ashton-under-Lyne constituency. When the work was first delivered there was no dog in the painting, Lord Rhodes returned it to Lowry and asked him to paint one in because there had been a dog at the meeting.
