Lot Essay

Lots 10-16 date from the last seven years of Waterhouse's life and are characteristic of the sketches he made to fix the compositions of his pictures. Ophelia was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1910 (no.114) and was the last of three treatments of the theme by Waterhouse, the others dating from 1889 and 1894. Now the property of Pre-Raphaelite Inc., the picture was in the Last Romantics exhibition at the Barbican in 1989 (no.113) and appeared on the poster. It is reproduced in Anthony Hobson's two monographs on the artist, 1980, fig.79 (incorrectly dated 1894) and 1989, fig.83. The rather 'wild' sketch on the back is for the same figure and shows Waterhouse trying out a variety of positions for her arms
