A London painter of landscape and genre, Shirley exhibited at the Royal Academy (1843-70), the British Institution and Suffolk Street. He tended to specialise in coastal and river subjects; an early view of Llanberis Lake, Wales, dated 1836, suggests the influence of Turner and Wilson.
