Lot Essay

Generally known as William Weekes, the artist was the brother of the animal and genre painter Henry Weekes (fl. 1851-1884) and the youngest son of the sculptor Henry Weeks, R.A. (1807-1877). Like his brother, he specialised in pictures of animals, generally giving them a humourous twist as in the present example. He lived in London and exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and elsewhere.
